How to Choose the Best Dietician in India: A 12-Point Checklist
Qualifications to check, red flags to avoid, questions to ask before you pay, and what to look for if you have PCOS, thyroid, diabetes or stubborn weight — written by a clinical dietician, not a sales team.

The short answer
The best dietician in India for you is the one who:
- Holds a real degree in dietetics or food & nutrition, with clinical experience.
- Reads your blood reports and medical history before writing a single meal.
- Builds the plan around the Indian food your family already cooks.
- Follows up every week and changes the plan when your body doesn't respond.
- Never pushes supplements, crash diets or "guaranteed kilos per month".
Dietician vs nutritionist vs fitness coach: what's the difference in India?
In India, almost anyone can call themselves a "nutritionist" or "diet expert" on Instagram. That's the first reason choosing is hard. Before comparing names, understand who is trained to do what.
| Who | Typical training | Best suited for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clinical dietician | BSc / MSc in Dietetics, Food & Nutrition or Clinical Nutrition; hospital or clinical experience | PCOS, thyroid, diabetes, fatty liver, cholesterol, weight loss with a medical history | Ask about clinical experience, not just the degree |
| Nutritionist | Ranges from a degree to a short online certificate | General healthy eating, fitness nutrition | Certificates of a few weeks are not clinical training |
| Fitness / gym coach | Fitness certification | Training plans, basic diet for healthy adults | Should not be managing a medical condition through diet |
| Influencer "diet expert" | Often none formal | Motivation and ideas | One-size-fits-all plans, product selling |
If you have any health condition — even "just" irregular periods, a borderline sugar report or a thyroid tablet — you want a qualified clinical dietician, not a general diet chart.
12 marks of the best dietician in India
Use these to judge anyone you are considering, including us. Each one comes with a simple question you can ask on your first call.
Real qualifications
A degree in dietetics or food & nutrition (ideally MSc), plus years of clinical practice. A Registered Dietitian (RD) credential from the Indian Dietetic Association is a further plus.
Asks for your blood reports
TSH, HbA1c, vitamin D, B12, lipid profile, hormone tests — a clinical plan starts with numbers, not guesswork.
A detailed first consultation
Your routine, sleep, stress, cycle, medicines, digestion, past diets and what went wrong. A 5-minute form is not an assessment.
Plans around Indian home food
Roti, dal, sabzi, poha, parathas, festivals, shaadis, joint-family kitchens. If the plan needs quinoa bowls and imported seeds, you won't follow it for long.
Experience with your condition
PCOS, hypothyroidism, type 2 diabetes and post-pregnancy weight each need a different approach. Look for someone who works with your condition every week.
Honest, realistic targets
Steady, sustainable progress — not "lose 10 kg in 30 days". Good dieticians also track inches, energy, cycle and lab values, not just the scale.
Weekly follow-ups
Bodies don't respond on schedule. The best dieticians check in regularly and change the plan when progress stalls — that's where most results actually come from.
Teaches, not just prescribes
You should understand why each change is made, so you can eat well long after the plan ends.
No supplement pushing
Supplements should be recommended only for a proven deficiency — never sold as part of every package.
No crash diets
Very-low-calorie charts, skipping whole food groups, or "detox" juices can worsen thyroid, PCOS and muscle loss.
Works alongside your doctor
Diet supports medical treatment; it doesn't replace it. A good dietician respects your medicines and tells you when to see your doctor.
Genuine, verifiable reviews
Real Google reviews in clients' own words, spread over time, describing specific changes — not just before/after photos on Instagram.
8 red flags when hiring a dietician in India
- They send you a diet chart before asking about your health or reports.
- Your chart looks exactly like your friend's, just with a different name on top.
- They "guarantee" a fixed number of kilos in a fixed number of days.
- Every package includes powders, shakes or supplements you must buy from them.
- They tell you to stop medicines or ignore your doctor.
- They cut out rotis, rice or fruit completely for everyone.
- After payment, you only hear from an assistant — never the dietician.
- They can't clearly say what qualification they hold.

10 questions to ask a dietician before hiring them
Copy these into WhatsApp and send them to anyone you're considering. How they answer tells you more than any advertisement.
- What is your qualification, and how many years of clinical experience do you have?
- Which blood tests should I get done before we start?
- How long is the first consultation, and what will you ask me?
- Have you worked with clients who have my condition? What changed for them?
- Will the plan work with regular Indian home food?
- How often will we speak, and will I talk to you or an assistant?
- What happens if I don't see progress in the first few weeks?
- Do I need to buy any supplements or products from you?
- How will you track my progress besides weight?
- What exactly is included in the fee, and for how long?
Online dietician vs in-clinic: which is better?
Many people search for the "best dietician near me" when the best fit may be in another city. Diet counselling works very well online because most of it is conversation, reports and follow-up — not physical examination.
Choose online if you…
- Want a specialist for your condition who isn't in your city
- Have a busy work or family schedule
- Can share reports and weekly updates on WhatsApp or video call
- Live abroad but eat Indian food at home
Choose in-clinic if you…
- Prefer face-to-face conversations
- Want body-composition measurements taken in person
- Find it easier to stay accountable with visits
- Live close to a qualified clinic
What matters is not the format but whether the same qualified dietician personally reviews your progress every week.
How to choose the right dietician for your health condition
Best dietician for PCOS in India — what to look for
Someone who looks at insulin resistance, cycle patterns and hormone reports, not just weight. The plan should steady blood sugar with regular, balanced meals — PCOS often gets worse on starvation diets.
Best dietician for thyroid weight loss
They should ask about your TSH, your medicine timing and your energy levels, and plan meals so they don't clash with your thyroid tablet. Slow, steady loss is normal with hypothyroidism.
Best dietician for diabetes in India
Look for someone who works with your HbA1c and fasting sugar trends, understands your medicines, and teaches portion balance with roti, rice and fruit rather than banning them.
Best dietician for weight loss for women
Women's weight is shaped by hormones, sleep, stress and life stage. Choose someone who adjusts for your cycle, protein needs and routine — not a generic calorie chart. Check your daily protein needs here.
Best dietician for post-pregnancy weight loss
If you are breastfeeding, the plan must protect your milk supply and energy. Avoid anyone promising fast results in the first months after delivery.
What should a good dietician's fee include?
Dietician fees in India vary a lot by city, experience and plan length. Instead of comparing only the price, compare what you actually get. A fair fee should cover:
A cheap chart you abandon in two weeks costs more than a proper plan you can follow for life.
Already tried a dietician and it didn't work?
You're not alone. More than 300 of our clients came to Fit Zindagi after following a diet plan from another dietician. The stories we hear most often:
- "I got a chart on day one, and nobody looked at my reports."
- "The food was nothing like what we eat at home, so I gave up."
- "I lost weight at first, then got stuck — and the plan never changed."
- "After paying, I barely spoke to the dietician."
A plan failing doesn't mean you failed. Usually it means the plan was never built for your body, your reports or your kitchen. See what real, steady results look like.

Frequently asked questions
How do I choose the best dietician in India?
Choose a dietician with a degree in dietetics or food and nutrition, clinical experience with your condition, and a process that starts with your blood reports and medical history. The plan should use Indian home food, include weekly follow-ups, and avoid crash diets or compulsory supplements.
How can I check if a dietician is qualified in India?
Ask for their degree — a BSc or MSc in Dietetics, Food and Nutrition, or Clinical Nutrition is the standard. Ask where they gained clinical experience and whether they are a Registered Dietitian (RD) with the Indian Dietetic Association. Short online certificates alone are not clinical training.
What is the difference between a dietician and a nutritionist in India?
A clinical dietician is trained to plan diets for medical conditions such as PCOS, thyroid and diabetes, usually with a degree in dietetics and clinical experience. "Nutritionist" is a broader term in India that can mean anything from a degree holder to someone with a short certificate.
Is an online dietician as effective as visiting a clinic?
Yes, for most people. Diet counselling is based on conversation, reports and regular follow-up, all of which work well over WhatsApp and video calls. What matters is that the same qualified dietician personally reviews your progress every week.
How often should a dietician follow up with me?
At least once a week in the early months. Regular follow-ups let the dietician adjust your plan when progress slows, which is where most lasting results come from.
Why didn't my last diet plan work?
The most common reasons are a generic chart that ignored your reports, food that didn't match your home kitchen, and no follow-up to change the plan when progress stopped. A personalised plan with regular reviews usually fixes all three.
Should a dietician sell supplements?
A good dietician recommends supplements only when your reports show a real deficiency, and does not make them compulsory. Be cautious of packages that require you to buy powders or products.
